The word “Tomato” comes from the Inca word “Tomalt”. It was Christopher Columbus who discovered it in the 15th century, in South America. Tomatoes were grown by the Incas in the Andean region and were the size of our cherry tomatoes. It wasn’t until a century later that they were found growing in Europe, in Spain and Italy, in Naples. Because of its colour and shape, the tomato was baptised pomodoro, “the golden apple” or “the apple of love”. For a long time tomatoes were thought to be toxic, so were considered as an ornamental plant for almost three hundred years. It wasn’t until the second half of the 18th century that the virtues of this vegetable fruit were recognized. From then on, tomatoes could be found on every table in Southern Europe. It comes as little surprise that in France the first tomatoes were eaten in Provence. When the Provencal people went to Paris to celebrate the 1st anniversary of the storming of the Bastille for the National Federation on 14th July 1790, they demanded tomatoes wherever they ate. The powder is obtained from drying and grinding the tomato’s skin. It releases all the aromas and flavours of a tomato. It is perfect for replacing tomato purée. Recipe ideas: - Tomato soup for 2 people: 50g of ground tomato diluted in 50cl of water - Tomato purée for a plate of pasta for 4 people: 25g of ground tomato diluted in 12.5cl of water - Tomato sauce for a pizza for 4 people: 25g of ground tomato diluted in 20cl of water - Tomato concentrate for a stew for 4 people: 20g of ground tomato diluted in 6cl water
