Shelled sunflower seeds are not only delicious they are also good for your health! They are used in bread, cakes or eaten as snacks.

You can also roast them to enhance their taste and sprinkle over a home-made tart, tomato salad or a bowl of cereal. Sunflower seeds can also be ground with a pestle and mortar or eaten whole.

The sunflower plant originally came from North America. It was domesticated by the Amerindians who used it to dye their clothes or for painting their body. It was then introduced to Europe by the Spanish in the 15th or 16th century.

Its name comes from the Italian word “tornasole” which means “turns towards the sun” because the flowerheads move in the direction of the sun.
