The story behind tartar sauce

Nobody is really sure where tartar sauce actually originated but we do know that its name come from the Tatar nomad people. In the 18th century Tartars stretched from the Russian steppes across to Turkey where some ethnic groups still speak Tatar nowadays. The sauce was eaten hot or cold with fish and meat such as eel or chicken and was named tartar sauce.
