Salt Pearls

Djibouti salt pearls are naturally formed by the water, the wind and the movement of the waves of Lake Assal. They have been harvested for centuries by the nomadic Afar people who settle at the lakeside to cellect the pearls, then exchange them on the market for other goods. The smaller salt pearls are used like fleur de sel, whilst the larger ones are used in hot water for pasta and stocks. They are not very salty.
