The first traces of oranges date back to 2200 BC in China. The fruit was then cultivated from East to West first by the Sumerians (Lower Mesopotamia), then by the Egyptians. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries, orangeries flourished in North Africa. The Arabs introduced the orange around 1000 AD. However, it wasn’t until the 15th century and major trade exchanges that oranges became successful with Europeans. When the Portuguese brought them back from the trade counter in Ceylon, they discovered that they could be grown perfectly well in Europe. Orangeries sprouted up all over Europe, one of the most well-known ones being the beautiful orangery of Versailles, built under Louis XIV. Orange powder is obtained from drying and grinding orange peel. Renowned for its use in beauty products (for healthy hair and skin), orange powder is also the perfect companion for every cook! Orange powder has all the aromas of oranges and is easy to use! Sprinkle it over a dish, in a drink, over your cakes and pastries, adding a new touch to your daily dishes. It is perfect for replacing fresh citrus fruits when you don’t have one handy when you’re cooking and can be used in unusual ways which would not have been possible with fresh fruit. Recipe ideas: Sprinkle a few pinches over your fish just before serving, shellfish and scallops to add a delicious acidic taste. 1 teaspoon will delight your mayonnaise or your vinaigrette. Add 2 to 3 teaspoons to a chocolate ganache, vegetable or meat stew. For an unusual cheese plateau, sprinkle your goat’s or sheep’s cheese with orange powder: a pinch on fresh goat’s cheese, a teaspoon with fromage frais, or even coat cubes of feta cheese in this delicious and colourful powder.
