Details

Mirror salt comes from a natural wonder: the salt desert of Bolivia, known as the “Salar de Uyuni.” Once a giant prehistoric lake, it is located at an altitude of 4000 m and measures 45 m deep with an area of 12,000 m. Its billions of tons of salt crystals make up the worlds’ largest salt sea.

It’s called “mirror salt” because each February it is covered by 20 cm of water, which creates a perfect mirroring effect, to the point that you can no longer discern reality from your reflection. The beauty of this unreal landscape is breathtaking.

Mirror salt is the white gold of the Quichuas. It is one of this region’s most important resources, its main currency, so to speak. The Salar de Uyuni is made up of 10 layers of salt, or 64 billion tons of salt. It is non-iodized, unrefined, and natural.

The salt is harvested manually: once several meters of the ground have been scraped, the salt crystal scrapings are raked into cone-shaped piles. The piles are then collected and transported on the backs of llamas to the fertile valleys where they’re bartered. These pure salt crystals are a beautiful apricot color.
