Breton Curry or Breizh Curry: Let Yourself Be Surprised by This Corsair Spice Blend!

Inspired by the encounter between spice blends brought back by the East India Company and the fishermen of Lorient, Breton Curry is an exclusive recipe developed by Terre Exotique.

Breton Curry: A Blend of Spices that Combines Two Cultures

Spice Blend, Dish, Powder... What Is a Curry?

In the West, the term curry often refers to the blend of Indian-inspired spices used to flavor dishes. However, in India, it is more of a catch-all word that refers to a sauce-based dish, inspired by the Tamil word "kari," meaning "sauce dish." To refer to the spice blend, Indians prefer the term "massala," which means "mixture." Each region of India, and even each family, has its own curry recipe. It can be mild like yellow curry, hot like paprika-based red curry, or fresh like green curry, which is made with lemongrass and coriander. Traditionally, these ingredients are found in a curry blend: turmeric, ginger, cumin, fenugreek, and coriander. In this blend, it's impossible to forget the curry leaf, the Indian equivalent of the bay leaf. It comes from a tropical shrub, the Kaloupilé. Its leaves are often used in the composition of Indian curry. Curry is consumed in powder or paste form depending on preferences and recipes.

Breizh Curry or the Little Breton Touch That Smells Like the Sea Breeze

The history of Breton curry is linked to the colonial period and the importation of spices into Europe at that time. It was in Brittany, at the port of Lorient, that these goods arrived. Indian curry quickly mixed with the local cuisine, which was heavily focused on seafood. In the Breizh Curry recipe, you will find dried flavored seaweed such as nori, dulse, wakame, or even sea lettuce. Mixed with cumin, fennel, and coriander, these marine flavors give Breton curry a unique taste.

Breton Curry, a Mild and Fragrant Blend That Appeals to All Ages

The uniqueness of this spice blend lies in the combination of Indian flavors with Breton seaweed. The warm and rounded spices like turmeric, cumin, and fennel blend perfectly with nori or sea lettuce and its fresh and subtle taste. With dulse, a slight hazelnut flavor joins the mix. And wakame, recognizable by its bright green color, balances the composition with its iodine aromas. Breton Curry is an ideal blend for children because its spicy strength is very mild. An original, slightly seaweed-flavored blend to educate the palate without being bothered by too much intensity.

With Breton Curry, Dive into a Corsair Epic

In the 17th century, ships left the southern coast of Brittany to reach Indian counters and bring back their precious products: silk, porcelain, and of course, spices... Breizh Curry plunges us into the history of the East India Company, in the 17th century. At that time, the valiant explorers of Saint-Malo, skilled privateers, covered the seas in order to appropriate the most beautiful spices... and share them with the West for the delight of a good maritime accompaniment.

Breizh Curry, Our Love Letter to Brittany!

Terre Exotique has a strong history with Brittany and the sea... The creation of Breton curry was therefore natural. We have developed an exclusive recipe, composed of Indian-inspired spices and delicate seaweeds such as dulse or wakame. Bretons may refer to Kari Gosse®, another spice blend invented in the 19th century by a pharmacist from Lorient, Mr. Gosse. However, be careful not to confuse the two! Terre Exotique's Breton curry is made with seaweed, absent in the Kari Gosse® recipe. Moreover, in Terre Exotique's Breizh Curry,
