Nigella is orginally from the Mediterranean and Western Asia. It comes from the Nigella genus from the latin "Niger" which means black and refers to the colour of the seeds.
It has been grown since ancient times by the Egyptians and the Indians who ate it as a spice. It is used in many African and Oriental spice blends such as berbere, raz el hanout and baharat. According to the Prophet Muhammad, this seed had mysterious powers. He wrote in the Hadiths: "Use the Black Seed for indeed, it is a cure for all diseases except death".
